Compare Selected Supplements

When evaluating supplements or feeds, price per bucket or bag should be way down on the list of things to compare. Before even beginning to shop, you need to know your horse's requirements and what is lacking in his basic forage foundation so you can determine what you need to supplement. See Elements for an introduction to the basic elements of the equine diet.

If you're feeding a high quality forage, a simple mineral formula may be all that's needed.  If your forage is low protein, you could choose to add "straights" such as oats or barley or another high protein source along with a vitamin/mineral supplement, or you could include a highly fortified feed. These "supplement" feeds are fed at higher rates than basic vitamin/mineral supplements - usually in the 1-3 lb/day range, but in lower amounts than "complete" feeds.

Complete feeds are meant to be fed as most or all of the ration, contain high levels of fiber and less concentrated levels of vitamins and minerals.  If relying on a complete feed to provide minerals, they must be fed at the levels recommended by the manufacturer.  Most complete feeds are balanced (i.e. balanced to themselves) but if only use as part of the ration, the overall diet will not be balanced.
